AACN Releases New Adult-Gerontology NP
and CNS Competencies
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is pleased to announce the release of the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Competencies (2010) and Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist Competencies (2010). These national consensus-based documents were developed in collaboration with the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University College of Nursing (HI), the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists as part of Phase I of a project called Transitioning to Adult-Gerontology APRN Education: Ensuring the APRN Workforce is Prepared to Care for Older Adults, funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation. These competencies can be accessed at http://www.aacn.nche.edu/Education/adultgerocomp.htm.
We ask that you please share these important documents, with your colleagues, notably the faculty of the Adult, Gerontology, and Adult-Gerontology NP and CNS programs at your school. These publications delineate the entry-level competencies for graduates of master’s, doctoral, and post-graduate programs preparing NPs and CNSs who serve the adult-gerontology population. The competencies are intended to be used in conjunction with — and build upon — the core competencies outlined in the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice and the Essentials of Master’s Education for Advanced Practice Nursing developed by AACN. In addition, these documents build upon the NONPF (2006) core competencies for all nurse practitioners and the National CNS Core Competencies (2008).
This initiative is the first step in implementing the transition of NP and CNS education to encompass the entire spectrum of adult and gerontology practice as outlined in the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation. To review this document seehttp://www.aacn.nche.edu/education/pdf/APRNReport.pdf.
In Phase II of the APRN Adult-Gerontology initiative, AACN, in partnership with the HI, will be developing resources and faculty development opportunities to facilitate and support implementation of these competencies into the curriculum. We will keep you informed of these opportunities and resources as they become available. For specific questions about this document or the initiative, please contact Laurie Dodge Wilson, AACN’s Gerontology Program Director, at lwilson@aacn.nche.edu.

NICHE Launches New Online Knowledge Center
Website Houses Resources and Tools Supporting Improved Geriatric Patient Care at NICHE Designated Sites
NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders), the largest national nursing program designed to help improve care of hospitalized older adult patients, announces the launch of its new online Knowledge Center. The NICHE Knowledge Center ( http://www.nicheprogram.org/knowledge_center ) houses a variety of geriatric-specific resources and tools to help bridge the geriatric nursing training gap and achieve real improvement in older patient care.
The NICHE Knowledge Center offers clinical protocols, educational/training resources, management tools, methods of evaluation, models, and organizational strategies to develop and implement a system-wide geriatric program. E-learning courses and online training programs provide accessible and cost-effective options for individuals and hospital teams. Additionally, users can access the robust peer-to-peer exchange and national experts via the NICHE listserve, webinars, and discussion boards. Many of these NICHE tools are member-only resources.
"We created the Knowledge Center to give our established NICHE sites and hospitals involved in the NICHE designation process a readily available resource for training and educational purposes," says Elizabeth A. Capezuti, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, NICHE faculty director and Co-director of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing.
"Providing online, 24/7 access allows the healthcare professionals involved with the NICHE program to work more productively and effectively toward our goal of improving elder care."
About NICHE
NICHE is one of the only national nursing organizations designed to help healthcare professionals in hospitals improve the care of older adults. NICHE hospitals seek to create an environment where older adult patients receive care that results in better outcomes. This climate of success encourages patients and their families to seek NICHE designated hospitals for their medical needs. The NICHE Network now numbers nearly 300 hospitals throughout North America.
NICHE is a program of The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at NYU College of Nursing funded in part with generous support from Atlantic Philanthropies and The John A. Hartford Foundation. For more information visit www.nicheprogram.org. NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders)
